It's all about the story.

Drack is a 3rd generation oysterman from Bluffton S.C. He's an independent oysterman that work's for the Bluffton Oyster Company, one of the last oyster shucking establishments around. I met Drack when he became the subject that I paint around 2009 to the present. He's also my right hand man when it comes to these tabby installs, he's someone I can trust, always one step ahead of me, which is so rare in this new age construction industry. He's also the hardest working person I ever met, a work horse, like me.

In 2018, I was commissioned by Timbers Resort to build a tabby sign base in Kiawah, S.C. On any typical project, once I start, I don't stop, and figured I can pull this project off in about 12 hours. So, at 5am, Drack and I both loaded up the Penske truck, and headed to Kiawah. Everything was planned accordingly, we got there at 7am and hit it hard with non-stop production.

One of the steps in the casting of the tabby is the cure time. The hotter the temperature, the faster it cures, the colder the temperature, the longer it cures. So, we were done with the casting about mid-afternoon, and as the sun went down, the temperature dropped dramatically, about 35 degrees.

It was a waiting game for the tabby to cure. So, luckily we brought enough food for dinner, and sat in the truck to eat. Around 11pm, I crashed out on the nice sod next to the sign base, and took a long hard nap, as Drack was out like a light in the truck. I was awaken by a deer that creeped up on me and scared me tho death, and quickly went back to sleep. Then the irrigation cut on around 4am, and was quickly getting wet, and at this point I was ready to get this project done.

Around 6am, the tabby was cured, we began demobilizing, as we were both ready to get of dodge. Chris Burden, the owner of Timbers Resort kindly brought us a sausage biscuit and hot coffee, as the project was complete just in time for the letters to be installed for the grand opening that day. So, 26 hours later, we were on the way home with another successful project in the books with many lessons learned.
